California Native Garden

Over ten years ago this homeowner began incorporating California native plants into this three-quarter-acre lot with a steep slope. Features include a formal setting of courtyard pottery, raised bed and poolside gardens that enhance the sweeping views of the Pacific Coast.

The biodiversity of the garden supports a host of beneficial life: native solitary and bumble bees, butterflies, birds from hummingbirds to owls, and the occasional bobcat and mountain lion. The plant pallet features endemic and rare native plants from a diverse selection of California’s plant communities. Including coastal sage scrub, chaparral, channel island and Sonoran Desert plants that offer a sense of place.

The story continues today with the on-going effort to remove invasive plants, encourage harmony, habitat and sustainable practices into the landscape.
