Casa Romantica
Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a center for arts and culture located in the historic home of San Clemente's city founder, Ole Hanson, is surrounded by 2.5 acres of coastal gardens. The landscape, an oasis of beauty and tranquility year-round, has evolved from Ole Hanson’s first plantings to incorporate extensive water-wise and native plants which reflect the unique California coastal environment.
More than 30 gardens exist today, each with unique horticultural features and appeal. Signature gardens and features include: a Courtyard Garden, Butterfly Garden—which is a designated Monarch Butterfly Way Station, Cactus & Succulent Gardens, Native American Gardens which contain plants used by the native Acjachmen Indians, Children’s Garden, Herb Garden; the Story Circle, a vista designed to take advantage of stunning views, Bluff Top Gardens—with its yucca plant which was originally planted here by Ole Hanson in 1927; the Native Bowl—with steps leading to the spectacular view location of Serenity Point, and an exquisite sculpture "The Beauty of the Butterfly" created by internationally-recognized artist Matthew Placzek in 2017, and last but not least, the Woodland Garden which frames the far side of the property with rare Monterey Cypress trees.
The San Clemente Garden Club greatly appreciated Casa Romantica’s willingness to open their gardens to all of the attendees of the 2022 Garden Tour. We encourage each of you to return to Casa Romantica and spend more time learning about one of San Clemente’s most treasured and famous landmarks.
